POSITION TITLE: DIRECTOR OF WASHINGTON, DC, PROGRAMS/ RESEARCH FELLOW

BACKGROUND: 

The Hoover Institution, Stanford University, is a public policy research center devoted to the advanced study of public policy, politics, economics, history, law and international affairs. With distinguished scholars, ongoing programs of policy-oriented research, and major archival collections, the Hoover Institution seeks to develop and advance “ideas that promote economic opportunity and prosperity, while securing and safeguarding peace for America and all mankind.” 

 

In late 2013, Hoover established expanded offices and programs in Washington, DC. The Hoover Institution in Washington is an outpost involved primarily in the research and outreach activities of the Institution. There are three resident Hoover fellows in Washington and space for 

additional fellows from California to spend a few days, or even a few weeks, doing research and outreach. Meeting and events spaces facilitate speeches, panels, webcasts and research groups. A staff of 5 professionals carries out the work of relationship building, event coordination, research support and outreach. 

 

In its startup phase, Hoover in Washington has developed impressive offices, hired a staff and begun building relationships that will further facilitate the work of Hoover fellows being part of the policy conversation and work in Washington. Now it needs to identify a resident director who will lead the build-out of high quality research and outreach programs consistent with the mission of the Institution.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Reporting to the Director of the Hoover Institution, the Director of Washington, DC, Programs oversees the strategy, operations, events and research program of the Washington, DC office; oversees the work of the staff; directs and develops the Institution’s network of contacts in Washington, DC; represents the office in key relationships with administrators and board members, political and policy leaders, fellows and other academics. The Director of Washington, DC, Programs will also be the de facto director of research at Hoover in Washington, helping to define and develop an appropriate research program for the office. 

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

The Hoover Institution seeks candidates with a strong record of writing and scholarship as well as demonstrated capacity for energetic, resourceful and creative leadership. Candidates must possess an advanced degree, preferably a terminal degree in a field relevant to Hoover's work (economics, political science, international relations, public policy, law, history, etc.) and should have at least 5-10 years of leadership experience in a relevant setting. Work experience in both Washington, DC, and in an academic role is highly desirable. Depending on the strength of the successful candidate's scholarly record and credentials, he or she could also be considered for appointment as a research fellow or a senior fellow, coterminous with his or her administrative appointment as Director of Washington, DC, Programs.
