Directions and Parking

The Hoover Institution is located on the campus of Stanford University, between the cities of San Francisco and San Jose, California. As the map below indicates, the three main buildings that make up the Hoover Institution’s facilities are located near the corner of Galvez and Serra Streets, east of the Main Quad and Oval.

The Hoover Library is on the ground floor of the Hoover Tower. The Hoover Archives is on the courtyard (lower) level of the Herbert Hoover Memorial Building. The Herbert Hoover Memorial Exhibit Pavilion is adjacent to Hoover Tower and the Herbert Hoover Memorial Building.



From Highway 101 North and South
Driving: Take the Embarcadero Road exit west toward Stanford. At El Camino Real, Embarcadero turns into Galvez Street as it enters the Stanford campus. Stay in the left lane and continue toward the center of campus. Drive past Memorial Way. The Hoover Institution is at the corner of Galvez and Serra Streets.

From Highway 280 North and South
Driving: Exit Sand Hill Road east toward Stanford. Continue east, turning right at the traffic light on Santa Cruz Avenue. Make an immediate left onto Junipero Serra Boulevard. Turn left at the second traffic light and onto Campus Drive East. Continue around Campus Drive East; turn left when you reach Serra Street, at the gas station. Follow Serra Street until it ends at Galvez Street. The Hoover Institution is at the corner of Galvez and Serra Streets.


A day-use parking lot on Galvez Street at Campus Drive accepts currency, coins, or credit cards. On Saturdays all campus parking, except handicapped spaces, is available without charge to visitors. Campus parking map

    Stanford University is near the Palo Alto Transit Center; from there one may take the free Stanford Marguerite Shuttle bus to campus.
  • Stanford Marguerite Shuttle
    From the Palo Alto Transit Center, catch the Line Y (clockwise) or the Line X shuttle to the corner of Serra and Galvez.
