The rare publications and archival materials assembled by government officials, diplomats, military personnel, businessmen, missionaries, journalists, scholars, and private individuals chronicle social, economic, and political conditions in Asian countries. While maintaining the library and archives’ strength in documenting Asia’s transformations in the late nineteenth to twentieth centuries, our collecting efforts also focus on contemporary affairs.

The Hoover Institution Library & Archives acquires the personal collection of Rock J. Shih, a core military officer of the anticommunist alliance between Taiwan and the United States turned pioneer who successfully explored ways to reconnect with China.
The Hoover Institution Library & Archives has acquired the papers of Jiang Lin who was a former reporter for the People’s Liberation Army Daily.
The Hoover Institution Library & Archives recently acquired the papers of Chang You-ling, a pioneer of China’s modernization and state building. This collection complements Hoover’s existing archival holdings on China across the 1949 divide.

The Chao papers include more than sixty volumes of personal diaries, ranging from the late 1940s to the early 2010s, photo images of Chao’s political and diplomatic activities, news clippings, and other miscellaneous materials dating back as early as the 1930s.
Hoover Student Fellow, Sharon Du (Stanford ’22) is an undergraduate junior majoring in international relations curated an online exhibition, “The Female Image in Chinese Propaganda”. The exhibition features, Chinese propaganda posters and related ephemera held at the Hoover Institution Library & Archives.
The Hoover Institution Archives has acquired the personal papers of Hou Chia-chu (1928–2007), a renowned economist who is best known for his contributions to the studies of economic theory, economic history, and economic thoughts on premodern and modern China, as well as his participation in policy formulation for Taiwan’s economic development from the 1970s to the late 1990s.
