About

This collection consists of more than one thousand microfilm reels and some digitized copies of Lithuanian KGB files related to intelligence and counterintelligence activities of the secret police against dissident and anti-Soviet movements and to problems with repatriation and nationalism in Lithuania. An English-language overall guide to the collection is updated when new materials arrive.

The microfilm and digitized copies represent selected records of the Lietuvos SSR ValstybÄ—s Saugumo Komitetas (Committee of State Security of the Lithuanian Soviet Socialist Republic, LSSR KGB), 1940–91, held at the Lietuvos Ypatingasis Archyvas (Lithuanian Special Archives). Detailed Russian-language finding aids created by the Lithuanian Special Archives are available for each opis (records series) on this website.

The finding aids, which are arranged by file number within each opis, provide a description, number of pages, and the inclusive dates of each file. In some cases, the Lithuanian archives removed certain files and pages from the microfilm sent to Hoover because they contained personal names that could not be released due to privacy concerns. Entire files removed from the microfilm are indicated in the reel contents list on the microfilm at the beginning of each opis.

Hoover Archives’ KGB files examined by Stanford historian Weiner

Stanford historian Amir Weiner recently examined the newly accessible KGB files housed in the Hoover Institution Archives. Weiner found that “a system of checks and balances in today's Western-style democracies prevents agencies like the FBI from engaging in domestic surveillance at the same invasive scale as the KGB” (Stanford Report). The collection is composed of tens of thousands of documents, including informants' reports, interrogation minutes, and official internal correspondence. Nearly two decades after the collapse of the Soviet Union, the KGB archives are the largest accessible holdings (Russian and Ukrainian holdings are, for all practical purposes, closed) of the Soviet political police, which were left almost intact in Vilnius, Lithuania, after the Soviet Union disintegrated.
