2013 Rick Hess Straight Up Edu-Scholar Public Presence rankings

Hoover fellows Eric Hanushek, Paul E. Peterson, Terry Moe, and Caroline Hoxby are among the scholars listed on the 2013 Rick Hess Straight Up Edu-Scholar Public Presence rankings.

Hanushek, the Paul and Jean Hanna Senior Fellow in Education, was ranked fourth among the more than 150 scholars in the study, and Senior Fellow Peterson was ranked fifth. This is the second year in a row that both Hanushek and Peterson were ranked among the top ten. Moe (also the William Bennett Munro Professor of Political Science at Stanford) and Hoxby (also the Scott & Donya Bommer Professor of Economics at Stanford) cracked the top fifty. All four Hoover fellows are members of Hoover’s Koret Task Force on K–12 Education. Research Fellow Margaret Raymond and Visiting Fellow Paul Hill (a member of the Task Force on K-12 Education) were also cited in the rankings.

Peterson and Moe received special mention for their influential books on education policy: Peterson’s Saving Schools: From Horace Mann to Virtual Learning and Moe’s Special Interest: Teachers Unions and America’s Public Schools.

These rankings have been scored by Frederick “Rick” Hess, American Enterprise Institute's director of education policy studies. Click here to read more about Hess’s scoring rubric.

“The metrics are designed to recognize those university-based academics who are contributing most substantially to public debates about K–12 and higher education. The rankings offer a useful, if imperfect, gauge of the public impact edu-scholars had in 2012, both due to both short-term activity and longer-term contributions. The rubric reflects both a scholar’s body of academic work—encompassing books, articles, and the degree to which these are cited—and their 2012 footprint on the public discourse.” (Hess’s assessment)
