STANFORD—The Hoover Institution Retreat was held October 19–21, 2008. A number of issues were discussed, including the presidential election, financial markets, the credit crunch, property rights and democracy in Latin America, options in Iraq, and the challenges of a new administration. Featured speakers at the plenary sessions were Hoover fellows Richard Epstein, Niall Ferguson, Morris Fiorina, and Victor Davis Hanson. Breakout sessions included Fellows John Cogan, Timothy Garton Ash, Stephen Haber, Daniel Kessler, Michael McFaul, Edwin Meese, Abbas Milani, Kenneth Scott, and Richard Sousa.
