New Descriptions of African Collections Now Available

New finding aids to eight collections documenting social and political conditions in Africa are now available through the Online Archive of California. Highlights include sound recordings of interviews with Organisation Armée Secrète (OAS) leaders from the Algerian war for independence, speeches from the Eritrean People's Liberation Front, and photographs of the French colonial administrator Félix Éboué.

Library & Archives Hosts Second Annual Workshop on Political Economy

From June 22 through June 26, 2015, the Hoover Institution Library & Archives brought together scholars from across the globe for its second annual Workshop on Political Economy. Organized by Stanford history professor Jennifer Burns, the workshop invites researchers from diverse fields to study the history of economic thought using the archives of such notable thinkers as Karl Popper, Milton Friedman, and F.A. Hayek. Participants spent the week pursuing individual research projects in the Hoover reading room and participating in daily roundtables and discussions dedicated to expanding interdisciplinary conversations surrounding economics, political theory, and history.

Online Guide to Motion Picture Films in the Hoover Archives Now Available

The guide, which lists collections at Hoover that contain motion picture films, is intended to streamline the search and discovery process for those researchers and filmmakers specifically interested in films.

New Steven Spielberg Film Starring Tom Hanks Dramatizes A Story Of Espionage From Hoover Archives

In October 2015, Dreamworks Pictures will release Bridge of Spies, a cinematic thriller based on the life of James Donovan, a lawyer-turned-hostage negotiator whose archive is housed at Hoover Library & Archives. Directed by Steven Spielberg, written by Matt Charman and Joel and Ethan Coen, and starring Tom Hanks, the film tells the story of a Brooklyn-based lawyer who, during the height of the Cold War, undertook the unpopular job of defending suspected Russian spy Rudolf Abel—and then, after Abel was convicted, negotiated the KGB agent’s exchange for an American U2 pilot captured by the USSR.
