On June 25, high school teachers from the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History visited the Hoover Library & Archives to view materials related to the Great Depression, the New Deal, and the economic and political policies before and during World War II. Hoover’s rich holdings in this area of study—spanning from the collection of Raymond Moley, the speechwriter who coined Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s famous program, to Mark Sullivan, a journalist fiercely opposed to what he termed the “The Roosevelt Road to Ruin”—illuminate the vast complexity of responses to FDR’s ambitious domestic relief program.

On Friday, June 24, the second annual Hoover Institution Library & Archives Workshop on Political Economy hosted a public lecture by renowned scholar Bruce Caldwell, professor of economics at Duke University and director of Duke's Center for the History of Political Economy. Caldwell is the author of Beyond Positivism: Economic Methodology in the 20th Century, and for the past two decades his research has focused on the writings of Austrian Nobel Prize-winning economist and social theorist Friedrich Hayek, whose papers are housed at the Hoover Institution Library & Archives.

Hoover Archival Photographs Featured At Lecture Delivered By United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon

On Friday, June 26th, United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon spoke in Stanford’s Encina Hall in commemoration of the seventieth anniversary of the founding of the U.N. at the 1945 San Francisco Conference. Just next door, in the Herbert Hoover Memorial Building, The Hoover Institution Library & Archives house the United Nations Conference on International Organization Proceedings Collection, which includes sound recordings of conference events recorded by the National Broadcasting Company (NBC), photographs and contact sheets depicting delegates and scenes at the conference, and printed copies of the Charter of the United Nations.

Declassified Documents From Hoover Collections Now Available

More than fifty-two files of U.S. government records from twenty-five different archival collections at Hoover have been declassified. The collections were created by diplomatic, military, and other government officials.
