Papers of US Intelligence Officer & Diplomat William Tonesk Now Open

The Hoover Institution Library & Archives has acquired the papers of William John Tonesk, a US intelligence officer with a distinguished career covering Eastern Europe and the Far East. Born in 1906 as Władysław Jan Toniecki to a Polish immigrant family in Schenectady, New York, his parents instilled in him a deep-rooted interest in Polish culture, language, and literature. In the second half of 1945, Tonesk was moved to Warsaw as aide to US ambassador Arthur Bliss Lane. Soon after, he began working for the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA). After leaving the CIA in 1952, Tonesk served as a consultant to the Republican National Committee and US deputy chief of protocol.

One hundred years ago, on May 7, 1915, the British luxury liner RMS Lusitania sank off the southern coast of Ireland after being torpedoed by a German submarine. Nearly twelve hundred of the men, women, and children on board perished, provoking a firestorm of international condemnation. On the centennial of the Lusitania disaster, the Hoover Institution Library & Archives is mounting a short-term exhibition in the Hoover Tower rotunda. Remember the Lusitania! Discoveries from the Shipwreck will showcase artifacts retrieved from the wreck together with photographs, posters, documents, medals, and maps from Hoover's collections.

On April 6, European curator Maciej Siekierski and staff members Irena Czernichowska, Justyna Szulc, and Malgorzata Szudelski hosted a presentation of Hoover’s archival treasures for members of Stanford’s Polish Students’ Association. The Hoover Institution Library & Archives are home to the largest collection of documentation on modern Poland outside Poland.
