Xu Daulin (1906–73) was a distinguished legal scholar who made substantial contributions to the Constitutional Law of the Republic of China. The new acquisition includes Xu’s unpublished manuscript entitled Chinese Local Administration under the National Government and his personal correspondence with the scholarly community in the United States.
The Hoover Institution recently received the papers of Zeng Qi (1892-1951), a distinguished political leader, government official, journalist, and poet.
In September, the Hoover Institution Library and Archives received a large donation of World War II–era research materials from Roger Mansell, a retired businessman from Palo Alto, California, who has spent the past twenty-one years researching the fates of Allied prisoners of war from the Pacific theater of that war.
Westerners have been intrigued by the Kaifeng Jews since the 1600s. A set of sound recordings of interviews with Chinese Jews, recorded in Kaifeng, China, in 1985, has just been digitized by the Hoover Archives.
Stanford—Scholars examining acquisitions in the Modern China Archives, held by the Hoover Institution Library and Archives, are reassessing important events and leaders of twentieth-century China. “The newly available historical materials open up a window to understanding China,” said Hoover research fellow Tai-chun Kuo, who is a workshop coordinator, along with Steve Tsang, of Oxford University.
As part of its Modern China Research Project, the Hoover Institution is making available for research significant materials recently added to the Hoover Library and Archives East Asian collections. Photocopies of the early diaries (covering the period 1917 to 1931) of Chiang Kai-shek, the Republic of China's first constitutional president, will be made available to researchers beginning March 31. The Hoover Institution has the diaries on loan.
The exhibit will showcase information regarding General Stilwell's infantry fighting in Burma, in 1944
The diaries of Chiang Kai-shek from 1946 to 1955 are available to researchers at the Hoover Library and Archives as of July 18, 2008. They join earlier Chiang diaries from 1917 to 1945, which were opened in 2006 and 2007.
The diaries of Chiang Kai-shek from 1917 to 1931 will be opened on March 31, 2006. The remainder of the diaries will be opened sequentially during the next few years.
