The Hoover Institution Archives’ extensive photographic collections span the early twentieth century onward, documenting war, peace, and revolution, as well as formal and informal views of the people who witnessed and made history. Many photographic materials acquired before 1992 are listed separately in the Hoover Institution Archives Photograph Card Catalog. Items acquired afterward remain integrated within their collection.

Born-digital photographs depicting US National Guard units deployed in Iraq and Afghanistan, and images of leaflets and flyers distributed in those countries, are available for research at the Hoover Archives.
Two collections of digital photographs depicting activities and sites in the former Soviet Union are available for research at the Hoover Archives.
George S. Scherbatoff (1897-1976), a US Navy commander during and after the Second World War, also served as a member of numerous naval and diplomatic missions, including the US delegation to the conference at Yalta in 1945. The donated album, which is entitled “Trip to Greece with the UN Balkan Commission, November 1947-May 1948,” contains many photographs of the commission’s activities that are described by accompanying notes.
The Hoover Archives is pleased to announce the acquisition of the Francis Eugene Stafford photograph collection. The albums are a generous gift from Ronald E. Anderson (PhD, Stanford University, 1970) and family. Francis E. Stafford (1884–1938), a US lithographer and photographer, arrived in Shanghai, China, in 1909. He was hired by the Commercial Press—then Asia’s largest publishing company—to manage its printing division from 1909 to 1915. During the onset of the Wuchang Uprising in October 1911, Stafford was on hand to capture remarkable photos of the Qing Dynasty’s collapse. The collection, which consists of nearly 1,100 images, also includes the largest number of surviving original photographic prints of the Chinese Revolution of 1911.
The Bernard Lee Schwartz Foundation has donated a collection of thirty-four portraits to the Hoover Institution. Among the images are those of royalty, heads of state, diplomats, military leaders, and literary figures. Michael Schwartz, president of the Schwartz Foundation and son of Bernard “Bern” Schwartz, coordinated the donation. Included in the donation are portraits of Hoover fellow and British prime minister Margaret Thatcher, US secretary of state Henry Kissinger, four Israeli prime ministers, and journalist and author Malcolm Muggeridge. Lady Thatcher chose Schwartz’s portrait for her 1978 campaign poster, and a 1982 commemorative first-day cover commemorative stamp in England features his classic portrait of Lord Mountbatten. Muggeridge, a journalist, author, satirist, and television personality, was a frequent panelist on William F. Buckley Jr.’s Firing Line, and a collection of his papers is housed in the Hoover Institution Archives. Click here for more information about the Bern Schwartz collection.
In May 1961 Nikita Khrushchev visited the autonomous Soviet Republic of Adjara (Adzharia) in the present Republic of Georgia. The chief communist official in the region, Aleksandr Dursunovich Tkhilaishvili, was his guide and host. The photographs in this collection depict some scenes and meetings that took place during this visit. Of particular interest is someone in the crowd greeting Khrushchev holding up a large photo of Joseph Stalin, who at the time was out of favor with Khrushchev and his supporters.
The Hoover Institution Archives received the papers and the photographs of Bernard Gotfryd, Holocaust survivor and celebrated staff photographer for Newsweek for more than three decades until his retirement in the late 1980s.
