Overview

Many of these collections relate to the development of nuclear weapons, nuclear power plants, nuclear regulatory frameworks, and to debates about nuclear technology in the United States and abroad. Other collections document citizen diplomacy between scientists in the United States and the Soviet Union, particularly campaigns to aid the Soviet dissident physicist Andrei Sakharov.

Conference on Andrei Sakharov and the Conscience of Humanity

A two-day conference honoring physicist and Nobel Peace Prize–winner Andrei Sakharov was held at the Hoover Institution during December 10–11, 2014. Convened by former secretary of state George P. Shultz and physicist Sidney Drell, it drew a wide range of distinguished participants—from scientists, historians, and journalists to religious figures, military leaders, entrepreneurs and diplomats—as well as Professor Tatiana Yankelevich, daughter of Elena Bonner, Sakharov’s wife and also a staunch defender of human rights.

Harold Melvin Agnew

Harold Melvin Agnew, a participant in the Manhattan Project and member of the scientific crew that flew alongside the Enola Gay to measure the yield of the atomic bomb in Hiroshima, died Sunday at his home in Solana Beach, California, at age ninety-two.

Book by Taubman highlights five cold warriors, including three Hoover fellows, and their quest to ban nuclear weapons

The Partnership, by Philip Taubman, a former Hoover media fellow and former New York Times reporter and now a consulting professor at Stanford's Center for International Security and Cooperation, cites a January 2007 opinion piece in the Wall Street Journal that “captured both the long-term vision of a world free of nuclear weapons and a set of more immediate steps to reduce nuclear dangers.” The ideas about how to disarm our nuclear establishment evolved over many years of detailed work, but The Partnership gives much credit for building support to ban nuclear weapons as well as providing hope that the world could be free of nuclear weapons to the 2007 Wall Street Journal op-ed. President Bush Honors Hoover Fellow Edward Teller with Presidential Medal of Freedom

Hoover fellow Edward Teller has been awarded the nation's highest civil honor, the Presidential Medal of Freedom. Teller and ten other distinguished Americans, including Hoover overseer James Q. Wilson, were honored in a ceremony at the White House on July 23.
