Stephen Haber, director of the Hoover Institution Working Group on Intellectual Property, Innovation, and Prosperity (Hoover IP²), has announced that the second Summer Teaching Institute on the Economics and Politics of Regulation will take place from August 3 through August 14, 2015.

Held at the Hoover Institution, the teaching institute invites judicial clerks and law students, analysts at federal agencies, graduate students in law and public policy, and other young professionals to participate in an intensive symposium led by a distinguished faculty. The symposium focuses on four interlinked regulatory issues: competition among firms, the specification of and enforcement of intellectual property rights, energy and the environment, and financial markets. The seminars are taught by a distinguished group of professors from Stanford, Bowdoin College, University of California at Berkeley, George Washington University, Naval Postgraduate School, University of Pennsylvania, University of Rochester, and University of Washington.

Haber said that “Last summer’s teaching institute was an unqualified success. We surveyed the students at the end of two weeks, and their level of satisfaction with every aspect of the program—from academic content to housing—was astoundingly positive. Every one of them said they would recommend the program to other young professionals. It was an easy decision to continue the program in 2015.”

zorina teachingModeled after graduate business schools’ executive education programs, the summer teaching institute provides up to twenty-five participants with a unique opportunity to interact with peers and new colleagues and to learn from award-winning teachers. An important feature of the teaching institute is group presentations, in which students self-select into teams to analyze an intellectual property or regulatory problem and to propose a solution.

Attendees live in Stanford University housing and have the opportunity to extend their days in lively, unplanned, evening conversations. The attendees came from the United States and eight foreign countries. One 2014 attendee said, “Our discussions are extremely stimulating and often continue late into the evenings. It is almost certain that many excellent ideas will emerge from this collaboration and inspire our work long after the program is over.”

Prospective students may download the application form, which is due by January 15, 2015, from the Hoover IP2 web site.
