The Last King Of America: The Misunderstood Reign Of George III

The verdict of history has been grossly unfair to George III, the reigning king of England during Americas War of Independence, argued Andrew Roberts, renowned British historian and Roger and Martha Mertz Visiting Fellow, during a lecture in the Hoover Institutions Hauck Auditorium on Tuesday, December 1.

In his latest book, The Last King of America: The Misunderstood Reign of George III, Roberts prompts readers to reassess the legacy of Great Britains longest-serving king. Here is a recap of the discussion with Roberts which was hosted by Senior Fellow, Victor Davis Hanson, and the Hoover Institution's Working Group on the Role of Military History in Contemporary Conflict.

Hoover Fellows Present Archival Findings At University Of Chicago Economics Conference

On October 5, the Becker Friedman Institute for Research in Economics at the University of Chicago will host a conference entitled “The Legacy of the First Chicago School of Economics.” Organized by Hoover distinguished visiting fellow and Dartmouth professor Douglas Irwin, the conference will explore the legacy of the 1930s school of University of Chicago economists—including Frank Knight, Henry Simons, and Jacob Viner—and their relationship to a subsequent group of Chicago thinkers that included Milton Friedman, George Stigler, and Aaron Director.

On September 4, Andris Rāzans, the Latvian ambassador to the United States, and Dace Melbarde, the Latvian minister of culture, visited the Hoover Institution Library & Archives and viewed items from the archives’ Latvian collections, including treasures that are shown to such visitors. Later that day, Pēteris Kārlis Elferts, ambassador at large for the Latvian diaspora, spoke at Hoover on “Protest and Civil Disobedience: The Struggle for Baltic Independence.”

Rare Dr. Zhivago Materials Displayed In Hoover Tower For Largest Ever Boris Pasternak Conference

From September 28 through October 2, Stanford will host the international conference “Poetry and Politics in the Twentieth Century: Boris Pasternak, His Family, and His Novel Doctor Zhivago,” the largest ever dedicated to this Nobel Prize–winning twentieth-century Russian writer. An exhibition of Doctor Zhivago rare first editions from Hoover and Stanford as well as the private collection of Paolo Mancosu will be displayed in the Hoover Tower during the conference.

Drama Behind Barbed Wire: Theater In Oflag VIIA

The Hoover Institution Archives has recently acquired the papers of Jan Jasiewicz, a Polish officer imprisoned in Germany during World War II. Jasiewicz was one of the organizers of the prison camp theater, as well as its archivist and chronicler. The collection includes hand-painted announcements, programs, costume designs, detailed lists of participants, and photographs taken by German guards.

Michał Przeperski, a doctoral candidate in the Institute of History of the Polish Academy of Sciences, received a research support grant from the Hoover Institution Library & Archives this year. He is currently working on a political biography of  Mieczysław F. Rakowski, the second-to-last prime minister of communist Poland, whose papers are held at Hoover.

On August 8, Eric Wakin, the Robert H. Malott director of the Hoover Institution Library & Archives, was the keynote speaker at the annual Hoover Hometown Days festivities in West Branch, Iowa. He spoke about Herbert Hoover and the founding and history of the Hoover Institution and the connections between Stanford and West Branch. The celebration was hosted by the Hoover Presidential Foundation and held on the front lawn of the Hoover Presidential Library Museum.

Hoover Archives Acquires The Letters And Photographs Of Acclaimed Potsdam Conference Musician Stuart Canin

This week, Hoover Library & Archives acquired the collection of Stuart Canin—a World War II veteran, former concert master of the San Francisco Symphony, and the subject of the forthcoming documentary The Rifleman’s Violin, which tells the dramatic story of Canin’s musical performance, given at the age of nineteen, for Harry Truman, Joseph Stalin, and Winston Churchill during the July 1945 Potsdam Conference. The materials, now available in the Hoover Library & Archives reading room, include the young GI’s letters written to his parents during the Potsdam Conference, and photographs taken in Berlin and other European cities during Canin’s years of service.

Hoover Institution Acquires Records of Society of Russian Veterans of the First World War

Hoover Library & Archives have acquired the records of The Society of Russian Veterans of World War I in Los Angeles (cataloged under its Russian name as Obshchestvo russkikh veteranov Velikoĭ voĭny v gorode Los Anzhelose), an organization founded in 1925 to unify the veteran officers and soldiers of the Russian Imperial and White armies who had moved to Southern California at the end of the Russian civil war. The records include the organization’s bulletins, correspondence, and flyers, as well as members’ papers detailing their lives and achievements.
