The Last King Of America: The Misunderstood Reign Of George III

The verdict of history has been grossly unfair to George III, the reigning king of England during Americas War of Independence, argued Andrew Roberts, renowned British historian and Roger and Martha Mertz Visiting Fellow, during a lecture in the Hoover Institutions Hauck Auditorium on Tuesday, December 1.

In his latest book, The Last King of America: The Misunderstood Reign of George III, Roberts prompts readers to reassess the legacy of Great Britains longest-serving king. Here is a recap of the discussion with Roberts which was hosted by Senior Fellow, Victor Davis Hanson, and the Hoover Institution's Working Group on the Role of Military History in Contemporary Conflict.

Hoover Marks 70th Anniversary of UN Charter with New Collection

With the seventieth anniversary of the signing of the United Nations Charter on June 26, the Archives has received a timely donation of papers and photographs from the estate of Andrew De Metriff, a translator at the San Francisco conference that established the charter. De Metriff, a twenty-five year-old soldier stationed at Fort Ord, was ordered to a special assignment in San Francisco in the spring of 1945. Because of his fluency in Russian, this son of Russian emigrants to the California Valley joined a select group of military and civilian translators in Russian, French, Spanish and Chinese working for the United Nations Conference on International Organizations (UNCIO) meeting in the War Memorial Opera House.

Papers of Radio Free Europe's Communist Mole Show "Other Side Of The Information War"

Andrzej Czechowicz was probably the best known communist-era spy who was an active agent while working for RFE in the late 1960s. Employed for five years in RFE’s media analysis service in Munich, this Polish Security Service (Służba Bezpieczeństwa) operative collected considerable information on the personnel of the Polish section and on RFE sources of information within Poland and photographed thousands of pages of internal documents. After more than five years, Czechowicz returned to Poland in 1971 and participated in programs aimed at embarrassing Radio Free Europe and the US government.

Economic Historian Examines Herbert Hoover’s Role in World War I–Era Food Relief Efforts

Last month Dr. Mary Cox, an economic historian at All Souls College, Oxford University, who will be a visiting fellow at the Hoover Institution in the 2015-16 academic year, published a revealing study of the effects of malnutrition on German schoolchildren between 1914 and 1924. “Hunger Games: Or How the Allied Blockade in the First World War Deprived German Children of Nutrition and Allied Food Aid Subsequently Saved Them,” published in the spring edition of the Economic History Review, draws on newly discovered archival records to explore the lasting effects of the war and Allied shipping embargo on a generation of German schoolchildren who frequently went hungry in the war and postwar years.
