California Lawmakers Unwittingly Make Surgery Much More Dangerous

by Lee Ohanianvia California on Your Mind
Tuesday, April 7, 2020

California’s population of nearly 40 million is served by just 8,500 anesthesiologists, 2,200 of whom are certified registered nurse anesthesiologists (CRNAs). California’s recent anti–independent contractor bill, AB5, is making this shortage much worse and making anesthesiology more dangerous for patients.

Geopolitical Jockeying In A Time Of Pandemic

by Michael R. Auslinvia Spectator
Tuesday, April 7, 2020

You might think a global pandemic and the worst crisis since World War Two would lead to a welcome, if temporary tamping down of military activity in already tense and contested environments. Yet even as the novel coronavirus ravages the world, old fashioned geopolitical jousting continues in Asia, reminding us that the passing phase of COVID-19 will simply return much of the world to the status quo ante of great power competition.

Calexit Is The Last Thing California Needs Right Now

cited Hoover Institutionvia The Los Angeles Loyolan
Tuesday, April 7, 2020

Let me introduce to you one of the dumbest ideas in modern politics: an independent California. Calexit, a portmanteau of "California" and "exit," is a fringe political movement advocating for the separation of the aforementioned state from the rest of the country so it can form its own nation. Yes California, the group that's led the Calexit charge since 2015, argues that California's unique history, culture and economy justify secession.

COVID-Induced Economic Uncertainty

by Scott R. Baker, Nick Bloom, Steven J. Davis, Stephen J. Terryvia Becker Friedman Institute for Economics at the University of Chicago
Tuesday, April 7, 2020

Assessing the economic impact of the COVID-19 pandemic is essential for policymakers, but challenging because the crisis has unfolded with extreme speed. We identify three indicators – stock market volatility, newspaper-based economic uncertainty, and subjective uncertainty in business expectation surveys – that provide real-time forward-looking uncertainty measures.
