A Remembrance of George P. Shultz by James A. Baker, III

by James Baker IIIvia Hoover Daily Report
Thursday, October 7, 2021

George Shultz was a brilliant statesman, a dedicated patriot, a caring husband and family man, and a wonderful friend. George always understood the importance of trust in relationships—trust between individuals as well as between nations.

A Remembrance of George P. Shultz by Henry A. Kissinger

by Henry A. Kissingervia Hoover Daily Report
Thursday, October 7, 2021

For decades, George and I talked practically every Sunday. On several occasions, we promised each other to participate at the other’s memorial service. Knowing George, he will in all likelihood have found some ingenious way to uphold his end of the bargain, perhaps drafting remarks welcoming me to his present location. I am in no hurry to find out, especially as I still need to qualify for where he is.

A Remembrance of George P. Shultz by Sam Nunn

A Remembrance of George P. Shultz by John B. Taylor

by John B. Taylorvia Hoover Daily Report
Thursday, October 7, 2021

George Shultz was a terrific economist. He majored in economics at Princeton. He earned a Ph.D. in economics at MIT. And he was so much more than that. Many years ago when George Shultz was secretary of the Treasury, he said, “Economists have a particular responsibility to relate policy decisions to the maintenance of freedom, so that when the combination of special interest groups, bureaucratic pressures, and congressional appetites calls for still one more increment of government intervention, we can calculate the cost in these terms.”

Understanding Police Reliance On Private Data

by Farhang Heydarivia Aegis Paper Series
Thursday, October 7, 2021

Private entities play a substantial and growing role across the criminal system. It is both impractical and undesirable to eliminate all private influences. Instead, policy makers can distinguish beneficial private influences from harmful ones by focusing on those private entities with the closest relationship to law enforcement. These entities have fewer incentives to guard against law enforcement overreach and thus deserve heightened scrutiny.
