On February 6, 2021, George P. Shultz, one of this country’s most distinguished public servants, passed away at age 100. Shultz had served in three U.S. administrations as secretary of labor, director of the Office of Management and Budget, secretary of the Treasury, and secretary of state. After the 1986 Reykjavik Summit, he led negotiations with the Soviet Union that led in December 1987 to the Intermediate Nuclear Forces (INF) Treaty.

Hoover Preserves 1940s Color Films Featuring Winston Churchill, Vivien Leigh, And Sir Laurence Olivier

Films from the Frederick L. Anderson Collection at the Hoover Library & Archives were preserved recently with funding from a grant from the National Film Preservation Foundation. The three films were shot by Frederick Anderson, a US Air Force major general during World War II, and include scenes of bomb damage, as well as footage of Winston Churchill and his wife in Cuba, Winston Churchill’s daughters Mary Churchill Soames and Sarah Churchill, and actors Sir Laurence Olivier and Vivien Leigh.

The Hoover Archives recently acquired Japanese archival materials relating to a Tokyo-based, allegedly private-funded think tank called the Continental Affairs Research Institute (Tairiku Mondai Kenkyujo). Hoover’s Continental Affairs Research Institute Collection includes correspondence between the Japanese government and the institute and analysis of and intelligence reports on Soviet Russia, China, and Mongolia from the early 1950s to the 1960s.

On May 2, the Datong Society of China Studies at University of California, Berkeley visited Hoover Archives. Under the guidance Hsiao-ting Lin, Hoover co-curator for Asian collections, and Tianyi Dong, Director of External Affairs for the Datong Society, the interdisciplinary academic group viewed valuable artifacts from Hoover’s Chinese collections, including documents and photographs, the Chiang Kai-shek diaries, and artifacts related to the Chinese Cultural Revolution.

On April 21, forty student delegates from Stanford’s US-Russia Forum visited Hoover Archives to view rare artifacts from Hoover’s Russian and Eurasian collections, as well as material from Hoover’s extensive Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty collection. Guided by Anatol Shmelev, Hoover’s Robert Conquest Curator for Russian and Eurasian collections, the students engaged in a lively discussion of the history, provenance, and preservation of archival materials, and viewed the documents, posters, photographs, family albums, and film reels that make up the extensive Russia-related holdings at Hoover.
