One student summed up two weeks at the Hoover IP² Summer Teaching Institute on the Politics and Economics of Regulation as “absolutely amazing. One of the highlights of my year.” The twenty student participants—all with an eye toward their futures as policy makers—are judicial interns, US congressional and legislative agency staff, law and public policy students, and advanced graduate students in economics, law, and political science.

The fourth annual Hoover Institution workshop on China, entitled Transition and Transformation: China in the Twentieth Century, was held from August 1 to August 10. This year, the workshop was cosponsored with the Seminar of East Asian Studies, Free University of Berlin and featured eight speakers from the United States, United Kingdom, Germany, and China, all of whom analyzed political, economic, social, and institutional factors leading to the transformation of China in the past century.

With the start of the Rio Olympics approaching, the Hoover Library & Archives have coincidentally acquired German publications promoting and documenting the games of the XI Olympiad held in Berlin in 1936.  These imprints, full of attractive drawings and high-quality photographs, now added to the German Subject Collection, complement an excellent collection of images from the Berlin games already available in Hoover Archives’ Erich Knapp Papers. 

Twenty students from leading universities from around the county and from around the world arrived at the Hoover Institution on July 31 for the third annual Hoover IP2 Summer Teaching Institute on the Economics and Politics of Regulation (STI). The STI is an intensive two-week program designed to teach budding policy makers how to apply evidence and scientific reasoning to writing legislation, creating regulations, and adjudicating disputes that arise relating to property rights.
