This week, Hoover Library & Archives acquired the collection of Stuart Canin—a World War II veteran, former concert master of the San Francisco Symphony, and the subject of the forthcoming documentary The Rifleman’s Violin, which tells the dramatic story of Canin’s musical performance, given at the age of nineteen, for Harry Truman, Joseph Stalin, and Winston Churchill during the July 1945 Potsdam Conference. The materials, now available in the Hoover Library & Archives reading room, include the young GI’s letters written to his parents during the Potsdam Conference, and photographs taken in Berlin and other European cities during Canin’s years of service.

A bipartisan group of Capitol Hill staffers were in Silicon Valley last week to gain an immersion into the complex world of cybersecurity. The range of experts they heard from included tech industry leaders, scholars representing a range of disciplines and former government officials.

Working in conjunction with colleague Inga Zaksauskiene of Vilnius University, economic historian and Hoover research fellow Mark Harrison recently published an article entitled “Counter-intelligence in a Command Economy” in the latest edition of the Economic History Review. Drawing from the Lietuvos ypatingasis archyvas (Lithuanian Special Archive) at Hoover and the KGB archives in Vilnius, Zaksauskiene and Harrison provide the first in-depth description of the KGB as a market regulator in the Soviet economy of the 1960s and 1970s.

The second annual Congressional Cyber Boot Camp will be held at Stanford University August 17-19.  A bipartisan group of thirty senior Senate and House staffers will participate in the three-day workshop hosted by the Hoover Institution, Stanford’s Center for International Security and Cooperation (CISAC) and the Freeman Spogli Institute for International Studies.
