Because of their national spirit, Edmund Burke cautioned Parliament in his 1775 “Speech on Conciliation,” the Americans’ opposition to taxation without representation required “an unusual degree of care and calmness.” The growth of the population and the colonies’ outsized commercial contribution to the British empire by themselves counseled every reasonable effort to compromise.

The High Price Of American Naiveté

quoting Stephen Kotkinvia InvestmentU
Tuesday, April 21, 2020

Last week’s cover story in The Economist – “Is China winning?” – contemplates whether the COVID-19 pandemic has made China stronger than ever. A widespread Chinese propaganda campaign hails the country’s control of the COVID-19 virus as a geopolitical triumph. Its message? China brought the epidemic under control thanks to the superiority of Chinese-style socialism and its unique ability to marshal people and resources.

Earth Day Celebrations Will Be Quieted By COVID-19

by Terry Andersonvia The Hill
Tuesday, April 21, 2020

Earth Day’s 50-year anniversary on April 22 is likely to take a back seat to COVID-19, but environmentalists are already seeing a way to leverage the pandemic for their causes. Climate activist Bill McKibben, for example, sees this as an opportunity to implement regulations “in ways that were unimaginable.” In other words, if the heavy-handed government can stop COVID-19, why can’t it save the earth from climate change?

Coronavirus Crisis Doesn't Mean President Trump, Or Other Presidents, Can Be Despots

quoting John Yoovia Delaware Online
Tuesday, April 21, 2020

Apparently, President Donald Trump missed the part of his high school civics class about presidents not being despots. He never learned about the Declaration of Independence’s condemnation of King George III’s “repeated injuries and usurpations” or how the Framers, intent on avoiding such “absolute tyranny,” divided power both horizontally, between the branches of the federal government, and vertically, between the federal government and state governments.

Cold War 2

If the US-Soviet standoff defined the second half of the 20th century, is a new “cold war” between America and China this generation’s defining economic and geostrategic engagement? Hoover senior fellows John Cochrane, Niall Ferguson and H. R. McMaster debate whether a new cold war indeed is under way and what defines the competition. (Spoiler alert: the three “GoodFellows” are not in agreement.)

Tidbits Of Wisdom

by John H. Cochrane quoting Niall Fergusonvia The Grumpy Economist
Monday, April 20, 2020

From my Hoover colleague Niall Ferguson. It is not just that Trump bungled his response to the crisis (though he certainly did). Much more troubling is the realisation that the parts of the federal government that are responsible for handling a crisis like this – supposedly, the genuine experts — bungled it too.

Bailout Redux

by John H. Cochranevia The Grumpy Economist
Monday, April 20, 2020

The greatest financial bailout of all time is underway. It’s 2008 on steroids. Yet where is the outrage? The silence is deafening. Remember the Tea Party and occupy Wall Street? “Never again” they said in 2008. Now everyone just wants the Fed to print more money, faster. (Well, there are some free market economists left. But we're a small voice!)
