From September 28 through October 2, Stanford will host the international conference “Poetry and Politics in the Twentieth Century: Boris Pasternak, His Family, and His Novel Doctor Zhivago,” the largest ever dedicated to this Nobel Prize–winning twentieth-century Russian writer. An exhibition of Doctor Zhivago rare first editions from Hoover and Stanford as well as the private collection of Paolo Mancosu will be displayed in the Hoover Tower during the conference.

Michał Przeperski, a doctoral candidate in the Institute of History of the Polish Academy of Sciences, received a research support grant from the Hoover Institution Library & Archives this year. He is currently working on a political biography of  Mieczysław F. Rakowski, the second-to-last prime minister of communist Poland, whose papers are held at Hoover.

This week, Hoover Library & Archives acquired the collection of Stuart Canin—a World War II veteran, former concert master of the San Francisco Symphony, and the subject of the forthcoming documentary The Rifleman’s Violin, which tells the dramatic story of Canin’s musical performance, given at the age of nineteen, for Harry Truman, Joseph Stalin, and Winston Churchill during the July 1945 Potsdam Conference. The materials, now available in the Hoover Library & Archives reading room, include the young GI’s letters written to his parents during the Potsdam Conference, and photographs taken in Berlin and other European cities during Canin’s years of service.

A bipartisan group of Capitol Hill staffers were in Silicon Valley last week to gain an immersion into the complex world of cybersecurity. The range of experts they heard from included tech industry leaders, scholars representing a range of disciplines and former government officials.
