#88 Andrew Roberts – What makes a great leader in times of war?

In our new CONVOCO! Podcast Corinne M. Flick speaks with Andrew Roberts, British historian, Professor at King’s College London, and author of many books including Leadership in War, about:

What makes a great leader in times of war?

Here’s a snippet of what he said:

It is rare for people to be very good leaders in both wartime and peacetime. War and peace require different skillsets.

Leadership is not a good thing in and of itself. We have to think about it in amoral terms. Leadership can be used for bad things as well as for good.

President Zelenskyy shows all the classic signs of a great leader, signs that go back all the way through history to Pericles and Caesar.

There are lots of characteristics like good moral character that one thinks are necessary for leadership, but they are not. Leadership is fascinating in that regard.

Human nature is not moving at the same speed as technological advances in the ways of killing people. That is one of the most dangerous aspects of the human condition.
