A Foreign Diplomat Just Taught America How to Win the War of Ideas

Research | Articles | by Kori Schake
    Monday, August 17, 2015

It is conventional wisdom in Washington that the United States is losing the “war of ideas” to the Islamic State, Hamas, Hezbollah, Iran, al Qaeda, and even the Taliban.  All those forces of entropy and intolerance that practice and support terrorism are somehow proving superior at messaging to the country with Madison Avenue advertising, Silicon Valley innovation, Hollywood image-making, the 24-hour news cycle, and permanent political campaigning.

    Rules for International Monetary Stability

    Research | Books
    Monday, April 10, 2017

The perceived negative consequences of spillovers from the actions of central banks around the world have led to increasing calls for international monetary policy coordination. Rules for International Monetary Stability reports on the results of a Hoover Institution conference that brought together academics, financial experts, and policy makers to focus on the need for a classic rules-based reform of the international monetary system.

    The Generals

Research | Articles | by Kori Schake
    Thursday, August 24, 2017

Press coverage of President Trump’s national security team has routinely described Secretary of Defense Jim Mattis, White House chief of staff John Kelly, and Lieutenant General H.R. McMaster as “the generals.” It is a convenient framing for those who fear a Trump presidency, for whom the three constitute “the adults in the room,” or alternatively the sinister undercurrent to military predominance in policy making, and for the President’s supporters, for whom the three are proof of the President’s seriousness of purpose.

Pilgrims And Power—The Military Aspects Of Thanksgiving

Research | Articles | by Peter R. Mansoor
    Tuesday, November 21, 2017

As Americans celebrate their unique holiday of Thanksgiving this week, they might pause for a moment and reflect on the pilgrims who emigrated from Europe to the New World in search of opportunity and religious freedom. When the pilgrims established their colony at Plymouth Bay in December 1620, the odds were stacked against them. Disease wiped out half of the 100 or so colonists within three months of arrival.

Research | Articles | by George P. Shultz
    Wednesday, October 3, 2018

Dramatic changes are afoot. The future will not be like the past.  Demographic changes and migration are having a profound effect as the workforces of some countries age and shrink, while others expand. The Project on Governance in an Emerging New World aims to understand these changes and inform strategies that both address the challenges and take advantage of the opportunities afforded by these dramatic transformations.  We will explore the implications for our democracy, our economy, and our national security, and for other countries.

    Repatriated Remains

Research | Articles | by Andrew Roberts
    Monday, March 16, 2020

As though the negotiations over Britain’s departure from the European Union are not complicated and contentious enough, a group of French historians have now made an official request to the British Foreign Office that the remains of their last monarch, Emperor Napoleon III—and presumably also those of his consort the Empress Eugenie—be repatriated to France as part of the post-Brexit deal.
