Hoover Institution fellow, decorated military historian and bestselling author Prof. Barry Strauss was awarded the U.S. Naval War College’s 2026 Hattendorf Prize during a ceremony at the institution’s Newport, Rhode Island, campus on Sept. 9.

Christopher Nolan’s controversial film version of Homer’s Odyssey apparently aims to make the 2,700-year-old epic poem more entertaining, instructive, and accessible to contemporary global audiences. But in doing so, Nolan has diminished the dynamic hero Odysseus and the exhilarating age in which he lived, at the dawn of Western civilization.
