Eric Wakin, director of the Hoover Institution Library & Archives, and Hsiao-ting Lin, curator of modern China and Taiwan, visited Taiwan the week of May 8, 2023, at the invitation of multiple institutions and organizations on the island state. During their visit, Wakin and Lin called on high-ranking officials at the Presidential Office, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of National Defense, the Academia Historica, the Strait Exchange Foundation, and the Taipei City Government. They also toured the American Footprint Museum at the Ching Chuan Kang Air Base (formerly the American Commander’s Headquarters) in Taichung, as well as the construction site of Taiwan’s National Military Museum, the White Terror Memorial Park, and the Chiang Ching-kuo Presidential Library in Taipei

Wakin delivered public lectures at the National Tsing Hua University and at the Academia Historica, with a special focus on the Hoover Institution Library & Archives’ recent endeavors to rescue endangered archival materials from around the world. With international travel returning to normal in the post-pandemic era, many hosts in Taiwan expressed their intention to deepen scholarly exchange and cooperation with the Library & Archives in the years to come.
