Space is a critical vector in geopolitical and technological competition, and the rise of a commercial space economy driven by private investment is transforming space launch, space vehicles, communications, and key actors in a domain that has until recently been dominated by superpower governments. The Leadership for Responsible Space Policy (LRSP) initiative conducts research into areas such as scaling space startups to meet vital national security needs, cybersecurity issues in space, and other critical issues.

In particular, it aims to help policymakers tackle the “space sustainability paradox’. Large numbers of new satellites and satellite constellations in orbit promise to deliver immense benefits to humankind. However, the associated increase in space traffic and debris could also jeopardize our access to entire orbits for generations. The LRSP initiative is exploring new technologies and policy frameworks that could help ensure responsible stewardship of this global commons.
