- Understanding the Effects of Technology on Economics and Governance
Quantum technologies apply principles such as superposition and entanglement to new capabilities in computing, communications, and sensing. Although quantum computing could eventually help solve complex problems in areas such as drug development, food production, and superconductivity, practical applications still require major advances in hardware, error correction, and specialized algorithms. The United States leads in several advanced quantum platforms, but China invests more overall. Preserving America’s advantage will require sustained support for basic research, access to global talent, secure supply chains, and an innovation ecosystem capable of moving quantum technologies from theoretical promise to real-world use.
