The Hoover Institution hosted "Education 20/20 with Naomi Schaefer Riley and Jonah Goldberg" on Wednesday, November 28, 2018 from 12:00 PM – 2:00 PM EST.

On November 28, our Education 20/20 speaker series continued with a provocative double-header, starring AEI resident scholar and former New York Post columnist Naomi Schaefer Riley and Suicide of the West author Jonah Goldberg.

Naomi Schaefer Riley in brief:
It's time for conservatives to concede that, while that school choice has enabled us to help many of the lowest performing kids, there are others who need something more and something different. . Empowering parents helps many kids, but the worst off get left out. Youngsters with no trustworthy adult presence in their lives outside of school don't benefit from a policy regimen that prizes parent choice above all else. They need more support and institutional arrangements that can make up for what's otherwise missing. Can conservatives embrace that reality? And can we find ways of doing it without further bloating bureaucracies and expanding the nanny state?

Jonah Goldberg in brief:
America is suffering from a crisis of ignorance: the loss of our own history, arising from weak schools, politicized professors, a future-focused culture, and the intellectual war on traditional perspectives. While political correctness and identity politics flood college course catalogues, even as civility and civic consciousness ebb from the large society, it's more important than ever that primary and secondary schools step up to their responsibilities: American education needs to reclaim civics education. One way to do that is by teaching the true, warts-and-all, stories of those who built the nation we inhabit.
