Nadav Samin, Research Affiliate, Middle East Institute, National University of Singapore, presented a talk on the rise of jihadi culture and global jihad, titled “Winning the Battles and Losing the War.” Samin has contributed to Hoover publications, such as his June 18, 2018 piece, titled “Bin Salman and the Promise (Or Peril) of Reform” which was featured on Hoover’s journal on Middle Eastern affairs, titled The Caravan. His award winning book, Of Sand or Soil: Genealogy and Tribal Belonging in Saudi Arabia, was published by Princeton University Press in 2015.

The main theme of his talk was that the United States was underestimating the resilience of and potential threat posed by Islamic extremism.

ABOUT THE PROGRAM

This talk is part of the History Working Group Seminar Series. A central piece of the History Working Group is the seminar series, which is hosted in partnership with the Hoover Library & Archives. The seminar series was launched in the fall of 2019, and thus far has included six talks from Hoover research fellows, visiting scholars, and Stanford faculty. The seminars provide outside experts with an opportunity to present their research and receive feedback on their work. While the lunch seminars have grown in reputation, they have been purposefully kept small in order to ensure that the discussion retains a good seminar atmosphere.
