The Hoover Institution hosted A Conversation with Representative Bi-khim Hsiao and Hoover Senior Fellow Larry Diamond on Friday, September 11, 2020 from 1:00 p.m. - 2:00 p.m. PDT.

With its remarkable success in managing the Covid-19 pandemic, its continuing technological innovation, and its vibrant and peaceful multiparty politics, Taiwan has won new appreciation globally as a democratic success story. It has also taken new steps towards a bi-lateral free trade agreement with the United States. At the same time, the PRC's crackdown on freedom in Hong Kong, its ambitious military expansion, and its bullying posture toward other countries in the Indo-Pacific region pose new challenges for Taiwan's democracy and security.  In this kickoff to a new academic year of programming, Hoover Senior Fellow Larry Diamond engages Taiwan's new representative in Washington, Bi-khim Hsiao, in a lively discussion of these and other issues related to Taiwan's future and its relationship with the United States.
