In U.S.-China Standoff, Is America a Reliable Ally?

via Foreign Policy
Wednesday, October 20, 2021

Following the chaotic United States withdrawal from Afghanistan, Beijing has been quick to raise doubts about the endurance of the American commitment to its allies across Asia. Even as Washington contends with the consequences of its rapid exit, its broader strategy on the Asian continent remains intact, writes Bilahari Kausikan, the former Singaporean Permanent Secretary of Foreign Affairs. While it is convenient for China to cast recent events as arbiters of long-term geopolitical trends, Washington continues to be a reliable regional partner in the face of increasingly antagonistic Chinese behavior.

United States intelligence sources revealed to the Financial Times this week that China has tested a nuclear-capable hypersonic weapon. The Chinese hypersonic glide vehicle circled the globe in low-orbit space, ultimately landing within two-dozen miles of its target. The test highlights the significant progress of Chinese hypersonic weapons and may be capable of evading American missile defense systems. Washington, Beijing, and Moscow are all seeking to gain an edge in next-generation hypersonic technology.

As the world prepares for Beijing to host the 2022 Winter Olympics, additional details emerge of the Chinese Communist Party’s campaign of genocide of Uyghurs.  The Australian Strategic Policy Institute released a new report titled, “The Architecture of Repression,” which provides detailed profiles of individuals and organizations that have aided and enabled the Chinese Communist Party’s crimes.

This week, Boston Celtics center Enes Kanter, released a video explaining the crimes that the Chinese Communist Party commits against the Tibetan people, which immediately resulted in having the NBA team’s games pulled from broadcasts in China.  This is reminiscent of Beijing’s sanctioning of the Houston Rockets when the team’s General Manager, Daryl Morey, tweeted his support for the people of Hong Kong almost two years ago.

via Financial Times

The UAE has long been one of Washington’s closest Middle East partners. It’s deepening ties to Beijing are adding a layer of strain to the alliance, raising American concerns about the potential security implications of its partners using Chinese technology. It is set to become even more sensitive for the UAE as it prepares to take a temporary seat on the UN Security Council in January, fully aware that it risks being squeezed between the competing interests of the two superpowers.

Xi Jinping Aims to Rein In Chinese Capitalism, Hew to Mao’s Socialist Vision

via The Wall Street Journal
Monday, September 20, 2021

Xi Jinping’s campaign against private enterprise is far more ambitious than meets the eye. The General Secretary of the Chinese Communist Party is not just trying to rein in a few big tech and other companies and show who is boss in China, he is aiming to rein in Chinese capitalism and hew to a socialist vision championed by Mao. This represents a significant departure from decades of Chinese policy.

This weekly newsletter collects articles, reports and other media from across the world to illustrate the actions and behaviors of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP).

The newsletter arose from the need to provide transparency to the citizens of liberal democracies of the scope and scale of China’s sharp power initiatives and the harms those activities cause to the Chinese people and the rest of the world.

As Xi Jinping stressed to the Party’s leadership in late 2017, “Government, the military, society and schools, north, south, east and west – the party leads them all.”  This newsletter takes the Party’s role seriously and examines the impact on the world of the Party’s policies as they tighten their one-party rule.
