Brazil’s Supreme Court has accumulated powers that extend beyond traditional judicial authority, raising concerns about institutional checks, individual rulings, censorship, and democratic accountability. Restoring constitutional balance will require Congress to reassert its authority and establish durable limits on the Court’s power.
ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Felipe Jafet was a student research analyst from 2023 to 2026 in the Hoover History Lab, where he helped create a conference bringing Brazilian federal judges together to examine emerging developments in artificial intelligence and democratic backsliding. He currently works as a paralegal at the Becket Fund for Religious Liberty, which focuses on First Amendment litigation, though the views expressed here are his own and do not necessarily reflect the views or legal positions of Becket or its clients. Jafet holds a BA in political science with a minor in history from Stanford University.
