The West's Dangerous Misreading of Putin In Ukraine

by Paul R. Gregoryvia Forbes.com
Thursday, March 6, 2014

Perhaps the West is simply pretending that Putin’s goals are limited to the Crimea and that a real crisis has been averted. Or do they not understand the obvious: that Putin has an overarching goal for the whole of Ukraine: He cannot afford an increasingly prosperous democratic Ukraine, integrated into Europe, on his western border. Such a Ukraine means the end of his ambition to reconstitute the Soviet Union in a Eurasian Union. The example of a growing and democratic Ukraine would undermine his political lockdown of dissent. A European Ukraine threatens Putin’s ambition to beat Stalin’s record tenure of a quarter century as Russia’s cult of personality.

Energy and educationCalling Israel and California "the most powerful innovation hubs on the planet," Netanyahu said the partnership can be expanded to other area such as renewable energy, biofuels and education. "The best brains in the world are in Silicon Valley" and in Israel's tech sector, said Netanyahu, who added that one simple advance would bring the two closer together: direct airline flights between the Bay Area and Tel Aviv. Innovation hubsBrown's office said the deal reached Wednesday will give Israeli firms access to the state's innovation hubs, 16 clusters of research parks, universities and federal laboratories that team venture capitalists with technology researchers. In addition to his talks with Brown, he huddled with Silicon Valley venture capitalists and executives from LinkedIn and Salesforce.com, visited Apple's headquarters in Cupertino, and met at Stanford University with the founders of WhatsApp, the free messaging app that is widely used in Israel and was just purchased by Facebook for $19 billion.
