Charles J. Sykes, an author interested in education reform, as well as a well-known radio commentator in Wisconsin, has been appointed a research fellow at the Hoover Institution.
Sykes is a senior fellow at the Wisconsin Policy Research Institute, where he serves as editor in chief of the policy journal WI: Wisconsin Interest. He is working on an anthology on education reform and writing a book on privacy that is scheduled to be published next year.
He is the author of several books including Dumbing Down Our Kids: Why American Children Feel Good about Themselves, but Can't Read, Write, or Add (St. Martin's Press, 1995), A Nation of Victims: The Decline of the American Character (St. Martin's Press, 1992), ProfScam: Professors and the Demise of Higher Education (St. Martin's, 1988), and The Hollow Men: Politics and Corruption in Higher Education (Regnery, 1990). He was also coeditor of the National Review College Guide (Simon and Schuster, 1992). Sykes has written about education, welfare reform, free market economics, and social trends for many national publications.
"Charles is very knowledgeable about K-12 education. He is a sharp critic of the current state of affairs, and will provide useful, thought-provoking ideas. In addition to his scholarly work, Sykes also is the host of the highest-rated daily radio education reform," said Hoover director John Raisian. The program airs on WTMJ-AM in Milwaukee. He also hosts a Sunday morning television show on the city's NBC affiliate.
