The public argument about artificial intelligence tends to create a binary of machines and humans. On one side are prophets who urge humans to accept “machines of loving grace” (the Anthropic co-founder Dario Amodei’s phrase). On another side are prophets such as the journalist Garrison Lovely, whose forthcoming book is entitled Obsolete: The AI industry’s trillion-dollar race to replace us – and how to stop it. This binary misleads. The wide use of AI is already a fact. Yet its fate and meaning will be derived from the uses that humans design. We are still driving the story.
