About

Erik Malmstrom is a veteran fellow for the academic year 2025-26 at the Hoover Institution.

Malmstrom is the CEO of SafeTraces, a leading dual-use technology company focused on predicting, detecting, and preventing biological threats. Under his leadership, the company has developed a pioneering early-warning system for natural, accidental, and weaponized bio-threats in support of the US Department of Defense, State of California, Amazon, Google, and other major clients.

Previously, Malmstrom cofounded CrossBoundary, a leading frontier market investment advisory firm, and is an alumnus of Cargill, Farmers Business Network, and the White House Fellowship, where he served in the Office of the US Trade Representative in the Executive Office of the President. 

Malmstrom began his career as a light infantry officer in the storied 10th Mountain Division in the US Army. He is a combat veteran, Bronze Star Medal awardee, and graduate of US Army Ranger and Airborne Schools. 

He received his undergraduate degree from the University of Pennsylvania and a joint MBA-MPP from Harvard Business and Kennedy Schools and was a Rotary Ambassadorial Scholar at Makerere University in Uganda. 

Currently, he serves as a commissioner on the Global Commission for Healthy Indoor Air and board officer and treasurer for the Build America’s School Infrastructure Coalition.
