About

Ziyi Wang is a research and teaching fellow at the Hoover Institution. As a diplomatic historian of post-Napoleonic Europe at the Hoover History Lab, Wang focuses on European collective security vis-à-vis Russian expansionism through examining European diplomacy of the long nineteenth century. Her research centers on disruptions to orchestrated diplomatic efforts aimed at safeguarding peace in the wake of revolutionary upheaval—exemplified by the Concert of Europe—which failed to prevent the outbreak of the Crimean War in 1853. At Hoover, Wang applies her research on the ever-relevant pitfalls of nineteenth-century European diplomacy to elucidate contemporary geopolitical implications: the rise of modern populism and the susceptibility to public opinion; the dilution of deterrence power and the hubris of territorial expansionism; the transactionalism of great power alliances and the perils of isolationism. She will further her extensive archival research from Britain, France, and Austria to illuminate current security menaces faced by NATO, emphasising the vulnerability of the Black Sea and the Dardanelles.

Wang is a member of the Royal Historical Society. Previously at the Hoover Institution, she worked as a research assistant to Director Condoleezza Rice and Senior Fellow H.R. McMaster, as she conducted research on political communication in China, contributed to a white paper on public-private partnerships in combating COVID-19, and assisted with evacuation efforts in Kabul, Afghanistan, in 2021. Beyond academia, Wang also has experience in the private sector: she worked for three years in financial intelligence at the FTSE 100–listed Informa plc in London, directly facing clients of major UK financial institutions and insurance companies. She is fluent in English, Chinese, and French, with knowledge of Russian and German. Wang holds a BA in history and an MA in international policy from Stanford University and obtained her PhD from the University of Oxford, where she studied as a Rhodes Scholar.
