Commonwealth Club Database Complete for 1980

Monday, November 16, 2009

Sound recordings of Commonwealth Club programs for 1980 have now been fully cataloged, bringing the total of all cataloged programs in Hoover's database of club recordings to more than one thousand. Most programs are speeches about local, national, and international political and social affairs, though some panel discussions and other formats are included.

Metadata cataloging intern Oanh Tran, a student at the School of Library and Information Science at San Jose State University, developed most of the new database records. In addition to verifying the program title and date, she wrote a program summary, assigned Library of Congress subject headings, standardized names based on the Library of Congress name authority file, and described each speaker. She has already begun cataloging the programs for 1981.

For more recent programs, basic descriptive records are available that include a title, date, and speaker names that have not yet been standardized. Details about these programs will gradually be added. Meanwhile, as the Hoover Archives continues to receive recordings of recent programs at the club, those new titles will be added to the database.

Users are invited to listen to the recordings in the Hoover Archives reading room at no charge. Please contact archives [at] hoover.stanford.edu at least two weeks before your visit to ensure that use copies of the recordings are available. To purchase recordings listed in the database, please contact the Commonwealth Club at club [at] commonwealthclub.org.
