Public Catalogs

Most of the holdings of the Hoover Library are listed in Stanford University Libraries' online catalog. Some of the materials acquired before 1977, however, may be listed only in the card catalogs located in the library.

Users are encouraged to submit requests at least two days in advance, as not all material is immediately available. Place requests from Stanford University Libraries' SearchWorks online catalog by clicking on the "Request on-site access" button on the left side above the call number. This action will prompt you to login to your Aeon account. Please Copy from the SearchWorks page exactly as it displays, eliminating any words or leading spaces brought over from SearchWorks.  If you need to add additional information to your request, do so before you schedule your retrieval or keep the item in your review list. Requested material will show as available for 48 hours.

Cameras are permitted, but scanners are not allowed.

Self-service photocopying of noncirculating library materials requires the permission of the reference librarian. Limited amounts of materials may usually be copied with this permission; some material, however, may not be copied. Copies (8 1/2 x 11 inches) are $0.15; larger size copies are $0.20 and are payable at the loan desk by cash, check or by scanning a copy card. The photocopy machine accepts one- and five-dollar bills and coins.

Borrowing Privileges

Stanford faculty, staff, and students and cooperative card holders from the University of California system may borrow selected materials. Most library materials, however, do not circulate and may only be used on-site. Some materials, designated as Library Use Only, may circulate for a short time to Stanford faculty and Hoover fellows only. Stanford faculty members and Hoover fellows who wish to take a Library Use Only item to their offices may ask a member of the reference staff if the item in question qualifies.

Circulating materials may be borrowed by Stanford faculty, staff, Hoover fellows, and staff for one academic year; for one quarter by doctoral candidates; and for one month by Stanford graduate and undergraduate students. Periodicals and newspapers do not circulate.
