The Hoover Institution Library & Archives hosted a virtual event Curator Conversation: Behind the Scenes of Eastern Europe and Beyond on Monday, December 1, 2025 from 12:00 - 1:00 pm.
In conjunction with Eastern Europe and Beyond: Photographic Albums Revealed, watch a discussion featuring three curators of the Library & Archives’ latest exhibition:
Anatol Shmelev, research fellow and Robert Conquest Curator for Russia, Ukraine, and Eurasia collections, who will reflect on the context of the albums dealing with the Russian Civil War and early emigration, particularly the Legie Ruska under Major General Radola Gajda, as documented in the Gajda album featured in the exhibition, and the albums associated with General Petr Vrangel' and his mother, Baroness Mariia Vrangel
Vladimir Von Tsurikov, project leader of the Russian Diaspora Initiative, who will offer remarks on the Legie Ruska under Major General Radola Gajda, as documented in the Gajda album featured in the exhibition. He will also discuss the Russian émigré presence in interwar Czechoslovakia, as reflected in the albums and archival papers assembled by Baroness Maria Vrangel.
Ognjen Kovačević, metadata librarian, who will speak to his contributions that focused on albums and photographs depicting the Balkan Peninsula, more specifically the movements of the Serbian and Montenegrin armies and civilians during the Balkan Wars (1912–1913) and World War I.
