Hoover Joins National Review Institute In Celebrating The Golden Anniversary Of William F. Buckley Jr.’s Firing Line

In May and June, Hoover Library & Archives joined National Review Institute in hosting three fiftieth anniversary events in honor of William F. Buckley Jr.'s landmark television show, Firing Line. The events in Dallas, New York, and Washington DC coincided with Hoover's current exhibition, Civil Discourse: William F. Buckley Jr.'s Firing Line, 1966-1999, now on display in the Herbert Hoover Memorial Exhibit Pavilion.

Hoover Provides Housing Solutions For Horizontal Storage Of Cracked Phonograph Discs

Hoover’s creative solution for the horizontal storage of cracked phonograph discs has recently been featured on the website of the Association for Recorded Sound Collections (ARSC), one of the leading professional associations for archivists dedicated to the preservation of audio recordings. Hoover’s housings, designed by archivists Brandon Burke and Rayan Ghazal, are quickly becoming one of the most significant open source solutions to conservation and space considerations among recording sound archives nationwide, and were recently featured in the Journal of the Audio Engineering Society.

Allan Stam Discusses The Importance Of Leadership

On Tuesday, May 10, Allan Stam gave a talk titled "Why Leaders Fight" as part of the Hoover Library & Archives History & Policy Lecture Series. Stam, a professor and dean of the Frank Batten School of Leadership and Public Policy at the University of Virginia, focuses on the dynamics of armed conflict between and within states, with an emphasis on war durations and outcomes as well as mediation and alliance politics.

Datong Society Of UC-Berkeley Visits Hoover Archives

On May 2, the Datong Society of China Studies at University of California, Berkeley visited Hoover Archives. Under the guidance Hsiao-ting Lin, Hoover co-curator for Asian collections, and Tianyi Dong, Director of External Affairs for the Datong Society, the interdisciplinary academic group viewed valuable artifacts from Hoover’s Chinese collections, including documents and photographs, the Chiang Kai-shek diaries, and artifacts related to the Chinese Cultural Revolution.

On April 21, forty student delegates from Stanford’s US-Russia Forum visited Hoover Archives to view rare artifacts from Hoover’s Russian and Eurasian collections, as well as material from Hoover’s extensive Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty collection. Guided by Anatol Shmelev, Hoover’s Robert Conquest Curator for Russian and Eurasian collections, the students engaged in a lively discussion of the history, provenance, and preservation of archival materials, and viewed the documents, posters, photographs, family albums, and film reels that make up the extensive Russia-related holdings at Hoover.

Senegalese Digital Initiatives Delegation Explores Hoover Archives

Dr. Babacar Fall, a fellow at The Nantes Institute for Advanced Study in France, and also the Chair of the History and Geography Department at Cheikh-Anta Diop University in Dakar, Senegal, and Oumar Tall, a digital archivist at the National Archives of Senegal, visited the Hoover Institution Archives on April 13th. The Falls were visiting Stanford campus for a conference entitled "African Colonial Employees Project Workshop: A Digital Archive Initiative," and toured Hoover collections and technology labs.
