The president of Taiwan, Ma Ying-jeou, met with Richard Sousa, director of the library and archives at the Hoover Institution, at the presidential palace in Taiwan. Ma, in recalling his visit to the Hoover Archives three years ago when the Chiang Kai-shek diaries were opened, congratulated Hoover on the success of the KMT microfilm project and the Chiang diaries. Those historical materials, Ma averred, are extremely valuable for researchers and provide new insight into modern Chinese history, as witness Jay Taylor’s new biography The Generalissimo: Chiang Kai-shek and the Struggle for Modern China. Ma also brought up the possibility of more opportunities for cooperation between Hoover and Taiwan in the future.
