Hoover Institution (Stanford, CA) — The Hoover Institution Library & Archives announces the opening of more than thirty interviews with influential political figures from the collection of author James Mann. The newly available material includes interviews with Dick Cheney, Colin Powell, Brent Scowcroft, George Shultz, Zbigniew Brzezinski, and Richard Armitage, among others. Many of the interviews were conducted for Mann's book The Great Rift, which details the relationship between Dick Cheney and Colin Powell.
American author and historian Lynne Olson commented:
James Mann's gripping account of the rise and fall of Dick Cheney and Colin Powell is almost Shakespearean in its pitch-perfect portrayal of two close friends turned bitter foes, whose ambition and internecine warfare played a key role in America's disastrous involvement in the war in Iraq, with grievous effects that continue to this day.

Mann has written a series of award-winning books about American foreign policy and about China. He is a former newspaper reporter, foreign correspondent, and columnist who wrote for more than twenty years for the Los Angeles Times. He is now an author-in-residence at Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies.
These interviews complement existing Hoover collections related to late 20th and early 21st century American foreign policy, including those featuring George P. Shultz, Condoleezza Rice, Donald Rumsfeld, and the George W. Bush administration records.
Scholars interested in U.S.-China relations will find connections to Hoover's robust holdings on Modern China, while those studying the Iraq War and post-9/11 American foreign policy may reference Hoover's Iraq introduction.
