Call For Papers
The Hoover Institution at Stanford University and the Japanese Association for Migration Studies invite submissions for the Fourth International Workshop on the Japanese Diaspora. This in-person workshop will be held at the Hoover Institution, with sessions livestreamed for remote audiences. All presenters are expected to attend onsite.
We welcome proposals from emerging scholars—including graduate students, postdoctoral researchers, and early-career faculty—whose work explores Japanese global migration in its broadest sense. Topics may include the transnational movement of people, ideas, goods, and capital, as well as diplomatic exchanges that shaped Japan’s global presence and fostered the development of communities in the host countries.
Drawing on the Hoover Institution Library & Archives’ extensive holdings on Japan, the Nikkei experience, and U.S.–Japan relations, this workshop aims to foster scholarly dialogue across geographic boundaries. Participants will examine the histories of the Japanese diaspora, situating these experiences within broader political, economic, social, and military contexts.
Through this workshop, we seek to advance a global and integrative understanding of the Japanese diaspora, while cultivating a new generation of scholars engaged in transnational and archival research.
