Hoover Institution (Stanford, CA) — The Hoover Institution Library & Archives is pleased to announce the digital publication of selections from seven significant collections, now available to researchers worldwide through its Digital Collections portal. These newly digitized materials cover critical periods of 20th-century history, from World War II and the Pacific theater to Cold War diplomacy and the Chinese Civil War, offering scholars online access to primary source materials.
Newly Available Digital Collections:
Bonner Frank Fellers papers – Documents from the military career of Brigadier General Bonner Fellers, who served as a military attaché and psychological warfare expert during World War II and as a key aide to General Douglas MacArthur during the occupation of Japan. The collection provides insights into U.S. military strategy, the Pacific theater, and postwar reconstruction.
Elena Pavlovna Fadeeva drawings – Artistic documentation by a Russian émigré artist who studied botany. The collection includes two volumes of botanical drawings of flowers.
John Roy Price papers, 1955-2022 – John Roy Price, Jr. served as Special Assistant to the President for Urban Affairs and was the Executive Secretary of the Council for Urban Affairs during the first Nixon administration. These materials document American engagement with Asia across nearly seven decades, offering perspectives on U.S. foreign policy, development, and regional transformation.
Hubert Gregory Schenck papers – Records from an engineering geologist, paleontologist, and science fiction writer who worked in petroleum geology and taught at Stanford University and Oregon State University. His work intersected with wartime mobilization, technological development, and postwar reconstruction efforts.
Crawford F. Sams papers – Documentation from a U.S. Army medical officer who played a crucial role in public health programs during the occupation of Japan, including efforts to combat infectious diseases and rebuild Japanese healthcare infrastructure.
Pai Ch'ung-hsi 白崇禧 papers – Papers of the prominent Chinese Nationalist general who was instrumental in the Northern Expedition, the Second Sino-Japanese War, and the Chinese Civil War, offering rare insights into Kuomintang military strategy and leadership.
Arthur N. Young papers – Records from the American financial advisor to the Chinese government during the 1930s and 1940s, documenting economic policy, currency reform, and U.S.-China relations during a transformative period.
Removing geographical barriers that have traditionally limited access to primary sources is a priority for the Library & Archives. Scholars from around the world can now explore original documents, correspondence, photographs, and more without the need for travel, accelerating the pace of historical research and enabling new findings.
Digital publishing not only democratizes access to archival materials that might otherwise be financially or logistically out of reach, but also allows educators to bring primary sources into their classrooms to share historical evidence with curious students.
Themes such as wartime collaboration, occupation policies, military modernization, economic development, and diaspora experiences are strongly represented in the newly available collections — which span American, Chinese, Russian, and Japanese contexts.
Hoover's Digital Portal will continue to grow with the Library & Archives’ ongoing commitment to preserving historical materials and making them accessible to the broadest possible audience.
To achieve this, archivists, conservators, metadata specialists, photographers, and other expert staff play a vital role:
