Workshop Series
Overview
Throughout the year, the Library & Archives host workshops that bring scholars from around the world to the Hoover Institution to discuss current trends in a specified area of study and to gain hands-on experience and access to many unique and rare primary sources from Hoover's fast-growing holdings. For one to two weeks, scholars conduct research in the reading room, meet daily to present their current work, attend lectures, and exchange ideas over meals. Hoover workshops promote multi-disciplinary, scholarly discourse, and have resulted in numerous publications in the form of books, magazine and journal articles, blogs, and monographs. Each workshop includes lectures delivered by leading researchers and authors in the specified area of study.

Authoritarianism and Democratic Breakdown
Workshop participants will use collections held at the Hoover Institution Library & Archives to study the operation of non-democratic states to understand why they came into being, how they work, and the sources of their durability or fragility. Other studies will include the factors that can corrode democratic states. The Hoover Institution Workshop on Authoritarianism and Democratic Breakdown is led by Norman M. Naimark, Hoover senior fellow and Paul R. Gregory, Hoover research fellow.
Latin American Studies
Latin American Studies
The Hoover Institution Library & Archives Workshop on Latin American Studies is a Hoover Archives initiative that has sponsored several conferences jointly with the Center for Latin American Studies of Stanford University and other institutions. Organized by Hoover Research Fellow Herbert S. Klein, Gouverneur Morris Emeritus Professor of History at Columbia University, the workshop initiative includes multi-day conferences as well as all-day seminars during which participants present their research and attend public lectures by leading scholars in the field.
Modern China and Taiwan
Modern China and Taiwan
Inaugurated in 2013, Hoover’s Workshop on Modern China and Taiwan yearly brings an international roster of leading scholars in Asian studies to Hoover Institution Library & Archives on the Stanford University campus to discuss the rise of China as an international power. Organized by Research Fellow and Curator of Modern China & Taiwan Collections Hsiao-ting Lin, the Modern China and Taiwan Workshop invites both junior and senior researchers to utilize Hoover’s archival treasures and share their research findings with a diverse audience.
Political Economy
Political Economy
The Workshop on Political Economy brings together an interdisciplinary slate of scholars who are using the collections of the Hoover Institution Library & Archives to study political economy, broadly defined. A wide range of research is suitable for this program, but participants must utilize the extensive holdings of the Hoover Library & Archives. Past participants have included historians, economists, sociologists, and political scientists. Scholars from any field who would benefit from immersion in the archives are welcome.
Japanese Diaspora
Japanese Diaspora
The Hoover Institution Library & Archives at Stanford University, which holds a vast collection on Japanese and Japanese American archival materials, and the Japanese Association for Migration Studies co-host the Japanese Diaspora workshops. Scholars discuss the Japanese diaspora from a global perspective and consider the history of Japanese migrant workers and immigrants as complex non-binominal interactive processes among the homeland and multiple host countries.
