Overview

The rare publications and archival materials assembled by government officials, diplomats, military personnel, businessmen, missionaries, journalists, scholars, and private individuals chronicle social, economic, and political conditions in Asian countries. While maintaining the library and archives’ strength in documenting Asia’s transformations in the late nineteenth to twentieth centuries, our collecting efforts also focus on contemporary affairs.

Kao Tsu, The Man Who Turned A New Page On Sino-US Naval Relations—A New Acquisition At The Hoover Institution

Kao Tsu was a Nationalist Chinese naval officer who served under Chiang Kai-shek. Learn about the role he played to help prepare postwar China’s contribution to the United Nations’ sea power for keeping peace in the Western Pacific, and his role in the Quemoy Defense Command during the 1958 Taiwan Strait crisis.

In Memoriam: Eugene Wu (1922–2022), Early Curator Of The Hoover Institution Library & Archives’ East Asian Collections

The Hoover Institution Library & Archives is saddened to learn of the passing of our colleague Eugene Wu. He died earlier this month at the age of 100 near his home in Menlo Park, California. Wu contributed to and presided over the growth of three outstanding East Asian collections at the University of Washington, Stanford, and Harvard. His legacy promises to be an enduring inspiration for librarians, researchers, and students of East Asia for generations to come.

Extensive Chosin Reservoir Archive Acquired By The Hoover Institution

The Hoover Institution Library & Archives has acquired the papers of Colonel George A. Rasula, a career Army officer who served in World War II, Korea, and Vietnam. Rasula fought in the Battle of Chosin Reservoir during the Korean War and became the historian for the veterans of the battle.
