Abraham D. Sofaer is the George P. Shultz Distinguished Scholar and Senior Fellow at the Hoover Institution, Stanford University. He is also a Professor of Law, by courtesy, at Stanford Law School. During his long and distinguished career, Sofaer has been a prosecutor, law professor, judge, and attorney in government service and private practice. A U.S. Air Force veteran, Sofaer served as a federal prosecutor in New York and as a professor at Columbia University School of Law in the 1960s and 1970s. He was appointed U.S. district court judge in the Southern District of New York by President Carter in 1979. In 1985, then Secretary of State George Shultz asked Sofaer to become Legal Adviser to the U.S. Department of State, a position in which he served until 1990 under both Presidents Reagan and Bush. Sofaer has been at the Hoover Institution since 1994.
