Hoover Institution (Stanford, CA) – Valerie Ramey, a nationally renowned economist who has led a distinguished career at the University of California–San Diego (UCSD), including a period as chair of UCSD’s Economics Department, has joined the Hoover Institution as a senior fellow. Her appointment became effective September 1.

Ramey’s research focuses on trends in wage inequality, the effects of monetary and fiscal policy, the impact of volatility on growth, and various topics on time use, such as the increase in time investments in children by educated parents.

"Valerie Ramey's research is at the cutting edge in helping us understand the forces that are shaping today's economies – including monetary and fiscal policies, frontier technologies, and climate change," said Hoover Institution director Condoleezza Rice.  “Her scholarship and experience will contribute substantially to the intellectual and policy impact of Hoover's research."

“I am excited to be part of the stimulating intellectual environment at the Hoover Institution.  I am continually learning new ideas and new approaches to existing questions during my conversations with Hoover scholars across a range of disciplines,” said Ramey.  “Working in this environment will be invaluable for advancing my own research.”

Ramey has published numerous scholarly and policy-relevant articles including “Cross-Country Evidence on the Link between Volatility and Growth,” “Identifying Government Spending Shocks: It’s All in the Timing,” Costly Capital Reallocation and the Effects of Government Spending,” and “Macroeconomic Shocks and Their Propagation.” Her recent work has explored whether rises in global temperatures decrease the level of GDP in affected countries and the size of government spending multipliers during recessions and periods of low interest rates.

In addition to conducting her Hoover fellowship, Ramey will continue her positions as professor emeritus at UCSD, research associate at the National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER), research fellow of the Econometric Society, and member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. She also currently serves on the Panel of Economic Advisers for the Congressional Budget Office and on the NBER Business Cycle Dating Committee, and as an associate editor of the Quarterly Journal of Economics and a coeditor of the NBER Macro Annual.

Her prior positions have included coeditor of the American Economic Review and member of several National Science Foundation advisory panels and the Federal Economic Statistics Advisory Committee.

Beyond academia, Ramey’s work has been featured in major media, such as the Wall Street Journal and the New York Times.

She received her PhD in economics from Stanford University and her BA in economics and Spanish from the University of Arizona.
